President honours Cuito Cuanavale fighters

Luanda, ANGOLA, March 23 - The Commander-in-Chief of the Angolan Armed Forces (FAA) João Lourenço Friday paid tribute to the "brave and heroic" fighters of the Battle of Cuito Cuanavale, in particular, to those who sacrificed their own lives. ,

 

The recognition is expressed in a message, ahead of celebration of 30th anniversary of Cuito Cuanavale Battle, on Friday.

 

The President referred to the milestone confrontation that brought together the thousands of Angolan fighters with Cuban and Soviet internationalists toward the integrity of the Angolan Nation.

 

The historical achievement was a clear reaffirmation of our People's tradition of struggle, which extends over time, according to a note from the Secretary for Institutional Communication and Press Affairs of President.

 

The Statesman stressed that this triumph will lead the Angolans to new victories in their joint effort to build a prosperous, social justice and inclusion society.

 

João Lourenço calls on Angolans to be proud of the crucial decision which has definitively changed the correlation of forces in Southern Africa region.

 

The Battle was crucial for securing the acceptance of United Nations Council resolution 435 for the independence of Namibia and the end of apartheid regime in South Africa.

 

The FAA Commander-in-Chief also highlighted the role of People’s Armed Forces for Liberation of Angola (FAPLA) in securing victory over South African forces on 23 March 1988.
